“Communication for All” is the theme for this year’s “Better Speech and Hearing Month”. At first glace, the theme seems simple. However, after consideration, I learned to love this theme and the idea behind it.
Communication is an important aspect to everyone’s lives, it is how we interact with the world around us. When the ability to communicate is taken away from us or if communicating with our children is a difficult or seemingly impossible task, life can be very hard.
As a speech therapy student, I spent two grueling years learning the theory, techniques and tools of the trade. As a therapist, I have continued to learn and apply these techniques and to place “order in the disorder”, writing goals, celebrating the little victories. Victories to my team and me might be when a child begins producing final consonants or starts producing specific syllable types. But to parents, victories may be altogether different. May’s Better Speech and Hearing Month is a great time to take a step back and look at the bigger picture and to just what improved communication means to the families with whom we work.
This month, we are going to celebrate just that. We have asked families to share what improved communication in their child has meant to them. Please join us in celebrating these incredible victories for children and their families.
